Tama Monorail Extension Approved for Construction! First Train Station Coming to Musashimurayama

This approval follows the track business license obtained in May 2025 and the urban planning project approval in November of the same year — it is, quite literally, "the permit to start building."
The approved scope covers structural elements such as support columns, track girders, and station buildings (infrastructure portion), with construction to be carried out by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.

The approved section runs from the current terminus, Kamikitadai Station (Higashiyamato City), to the vicinity of Hakonegasaki Station in Mizuho Town, West Tama District — a dual-track extension of approximately 7.0 km.

Musashimurayama Gets Its First Train Station

What makes this extension particularly significant is the addition of four new stations in Musashimurayama City — the only city in Tokyo's 23 special wards and municipalities with no train station.

The seven new stations will be located near the following points:

• Near Higashiyamato Police Station (Higashiyamato City)
• Near Murayama Hospital North Intersection (Musashimurayama City)
• Near Honcho 1-chome Intersection (Musashimurayama City)
• Near Mitsuki Intersection (Musashimurayama City)
• Near Musashimurayama High School (Musashimurayama City)
• Near Mizuho Ishihata Intersection (Mizuho Town)
• Hakonegasaki Station (Mizuho Town — transfer to JR Hachiko Line)

The breakdown is one station in Higashiyamato City, four stations in Musashimurayama City (including near Musashimurayama High School), and two stations in Mizuho Town.
For residents of Musashimurayama City, the rail access they have waited so long for is finally becoming a reality.

Project Cost and Schedule

The construction cost for the infrastructure portion handled by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government is 90.4 billion yen, with total costs including rolling stock, electrification, ticketing equipment, and other non-infrastructure items managed by Tama Intercity Monorail estimated at approximately 129 billion yen.

The project period runs from fiscal year 2025 through the end of fiscal year 2034, with an opening planned for the mid-2030s.

Once Kamikitadai Station is connected to Hakonegasaki, transfers to the JR Hachiko Line will also become possible.
Transportation across the northern Tama area is set to change significantly.

What's the Status of the Machida Extension?

Progress on the southward extension from Tama Center toward Machida is also slowly moving forward.

On March 6, 2026, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government issued the urban planning decision notice.
The total length is approximately 16 km, starting from Tama Center Station and passing through Machida City Athletics Stadium, Nihon University Third High School, Obirin Gakuen, and Machida City Hospital before reaching the vicinity of Machida Station.

However, the rail business license has not yet been obtained, and it will take a bit more time before the project is formally approved.
Machida City is proceeding with land acquisition for Metropolitan Road 3-3-36, with preparations continuing toward actual construction.

Daily Life in Higashiyamato, Musashimurayama, and Mizuho Will Change

Once the Kamikitadai–Hakonegasaki extension opens, rail access for municipalities along the route will improve dramatically.

After the extension opens, passengers will be able to transfer at Hakonegasaki to the JR Hachiko Line for convenient access toward Haijima and Kawagoe.
For residents of Musashimurayama City, a day when they no longer have to rely on a single bus line could become reality within ten years.
