Fireflies at HANA BIYORI in Inagi

Fireflies Light Up Inagi's Garden

HANA BIYORI, a flower-and-green theme park five minutes from Wakabadai Station in Inagi, is hosting its annual firefly viewing event "Hotaru Biyori" from May 23 through July 1, 2026. Visitors can see two species: the Genji firefly and the Heike firefly.

HANA BIYORI draws families and plant enthusiasts from across the Tama area year-round. The firefly program is consistently one of the most anticipated events—offering a chance to see wild fireflies accessible by train.

Two Firefly Species, One Event

Genji fireflies are the larger of the two, at 15–20 mm, emitting a bright, slow pulse roughly every 2–4 seconds. They inhabit clear-water streams and are the species most people picture when they think of Japanese fireflies.

Heike fireflies are smaller and flash in a rapid, continuous pattern, preferring slower-moving water like irrigation channels and shallow ponds.

Genji fireflies dominate in late May through mid-June; Heike fireflies take over in late June. For the best chance of seeing both, aim for a visit in early-to-mid June.

Evening Viewing Starts at 7:40 p.m.

HANA BIYORI normally closes at sunset, but during Hotaru Biyori a special evening viewing period opens. Admission begins at 7:40 p.m. and the main viewing window runs until around 8:30 p.m.

A separate evening admission fee may apply—check the official website before you go. Flash photography and smartphone lights are restricted in the viewing area. Following the rules is part of the experience.

Getting There and What to Bring

HANA BIYORI is a 5-minute walk from the north exit of Wakabadai Station on the Keio Sagamihara Line. From Tachikawa or Chofu, the ride is direct with no transfers.

Weekend evenings are popular—advance reservations may be required. Confirm entry procedures on the official site. Bring insect repellent, a light jacket, and a small flashlight if you have young children.

Inagi's Quiet Natural Heritage

Inagi is often associated with Tama New Town, but its southern areas retain rich satoyama—traditional rural landscapes that support biodiversity. Fireflies need clean water and intact ecosystems. Their presence here is evidence that this environment has been protected.

For children, seeing live fireflies is an experience no picture book or video can replicate. Whether you live in Inagi or are coming from Chofu, Tama, or across the Kawasaki border, the rainy-season evenings at HANA BIYORI are worth the trip.
