Akishima Citizens' Whale Festival 2026: 2,000 Fireworks Over the Tama River

The 53rd Akishima Citizens' Whale Festival will be held over two days, August 23 (Sat) and 24 (Sun), 2026, at Showa Park Athletic Stadium in Akishima. This is one of the Tama area's most distinctive summer events, with the whale as its central symbol.
The Fossil That Made Akishima the Whale Town
In 1961, researchers discovered a new whale species fossil along the Tama River in Akishima. Named Eschrichtius akishimaensis and dated to roughly 15 million years ago, this find reshaped the city's identity. The official mascot "Akishima Kujira" traces its origins back to this discovery. A full skeletal replica is on display at Akishima Ensis, about a 10-minute walk from JR Akishima or Nakagami Station, with free admission.
The Dream Fireworks on Night One
On the first night of the festival (August 23), around 2,000 star-mine fireworks are launched over approximately 30 minutes, synchronized to music and reflected on the surface of the Tama River. Compared to major central-Tokyo fireworks events, the crowd is manageable, and there is generally space to sit and enjoy the show. The main viewing area is about a 15-minute walk from JR Akishima or Nakagami Station.
Two Days of Performances and Festival Stalls
Live acts by entertainers and local artists run on the main stage throughout both days. Details for the 2026 lineup will be announced on the official website closer to the date. Festival stalls offer classic Japanese fair food alongside original whale-themed goods; popular items sell out early, so arriving soon after the 1:30 p.m. opening is recommended.
Exploring the Whale Town of Akishima
Akishima is one of the few municipalities in Japan where nearly all tap water comes from local groundwater. Whale statues and sculptures are scattered throughout the city and have become popular photo spots. Visiting Akishima Ensis alongside the festival gives a deeper sense of the city's history and character.
Enjoy Akishima's Summer with the Whale
More than 65 years after the 1961 fossil discovery, the whale remains a source of pride for Akishima's residents. The 2,000 Dream Fireworks rising over the Tama River promise to leave a vivid summer memory of the city. Join the festival at Showa Park Athletic Stadium on August 23 and 24, 2026.
